I could spend hours talking about the console wars but I think it is better explained by a bloke nicknamed ‘Yahtzee’ here. It is a few minutes long but it has some rude words (so keep your volume low) but it should raise more than a few smiles on your face.
And with that little video in mind it brings me to the continually-growing videogaming industry with electronics big-hitter Sony battling it out with semi-newcomer Microsoft and old guard Nintendo - however because games are becoming longer, more detailed and allowing people to play online there is a convergence of entertainment occurring.
This convergence has never been more obvious than with the launch of Halo 3 which saw over 4 million copies of the game sold within a month for the Xbox 360 – at the same times cinema tickets sales across the US slowed down with one week seeing a drop of 27 percent from the previous year.
Marketers, PR people and those in advertising who are involved in the entertainment industries will have to start standing up and notice the world of video-gaming - which began some forty years ago with the launch of Spacewar! in 1961. The industry is growing in size, and more than happy to take a chunk out of the wallets of those who were buying albums, heading to the cinema, or buying a DVD.
