The Stealing of Russell Brand

January 27th, 2009 by Rob Irwin · No Comments

The UK comedian Russell Brand started Twittering all of four hours ago (at the time of this blog posting), and his identity’s already been stolen.

Well, to some degree, anyway.

Posting as rustyrockets,  Brand has already gained 4490 followers with major Brand fan, Yours Truly, being one of them.

Imagine my surprise, however, to see an email a few moments ago indicating that Brand was now following me in return! Blimey, when it comes to celebs on Twitter, only serial-Twit Stephen Fry had ever done that to me before! But then I looked more closely at who was following me… rustyrocket. Same picture as Brand’s Twitter entry, but not Brand. Clearly, someone sitting on Brand’s Twitter page and befriending everyone s/he can see, in the hope that they will think the real Brand has started following them.

Neither of which is to be confused with the really, really, really fake Brand who went online last year: RussellBrand.

Confused yet? I don’t blame you.  Twitter is a fun tool, especially when it comes to following politicians or celebrities who genuinely do use the service. However, always do a bit of research as to whether you’re following the real deal or not. Because, sometimes, you might not be.
